What is WN8?
Anyone who follows their World of Tanks statistics seriously will run into one number: WN8. WN8 stands for Wargaming Number 8 and is currently the most accurate and most widely used performance rating in WoT. It condenses your performance into a single number — regardless of whether you are playing a starter tank or a top-end tier 10.
Unlike the simple win rate or the old efficiency formula, WN8 takes your performance relative to the individual tank into account. A good WN8 in the Maus is therefore harder to achieve than in the AMX 13 90 — the formula knows this and factors it out.
How is WN8 calculated?
The WN8 formula is based on five core values you produce in every battle:
- Damage dealt – the most important factor, weighted most heavily
- Kills (frags) – how many tanks you destroyed
- Spotted – how many enemy vehicles you made visible for your team
- Defence points – points for defending a base
- Win rate – whether your team won
Each of these values is compared against the expected value for your particular tank. Those expected values are based on the averages of all players in that vehicle — they show what a "normal" player would achieve in that tank.
The result is a normalised value: play better than average and your WN8 rises; play worse and it falls. Because everything is relative in this way, WN8 is tank-neutral — a heavyweight like the Maus is not favoured simply because it deals more damage per battle.
What is a good WN8 value?
WN8 is divided into colours, which you also see on WG-Watch.com:
- Grey (0–299) – beginner, still learning
- Brown (300–599) – newcomer with the basics down
- Green (600–899) – average player
- Light green (900–1249) – slightly above average
- Blue (1250–1599) – good player
- Purple (1600–1999) – very good player
- Dark purple (2000–2449) – unicum
- Super unicum (2450+) – the elite of the elite
The average player on the EU server sits at roughly 900–1000 WN8. Values above 1600 are classed as "very good", while the so-called unicums (2000+) belong to the top 5% of players.
WN8 vs. win rate – which matters more?
Many players ask themselves: should I pay attention to WN8 or to my win rate? The honest answer is: both together give the complete picture.
The win rate shows how often you end up on the winning side — but it depends heavily on your team mates. A single player can only hold a win rate of 55%+ over the long run by consistently having more influence on the battle than the average.
WN8, by contrast, measures your personal contribution independently of the team result. You can lose a battle and still have achieved an outstanding WN8 in that match, because you dealt 4,000 damage.
The combination of a high WN8 and a high win rate is the mark of a genuinely strong player who reliably helps their teams win.
Why does my WN8 fluctuate?
The WN8 shown on statistics sites is always an overall average across all your battles. That means early battles from your beginner days drag your value down — even if you play far better today.
This is why many players distinguish between:
- Overall WN8 – the average across your entire career
- Recent WN8 – the value over the last 1,000 battles or 30 days

Can WN8 be "farmed"?
Yes — and that is a known weakness of the formula. Players can deliberately inflate their WN8 by playing only tanks whose expected values are particularly low, or by shooting already beaten opponents at the end of a battle to collect damage. The community calls this behaviour padding.
A padded WN8 is easy to spot, though: if someone has 3,000 WN8 but only a 50% win rate and mostly tier 3 battles in their statistics, something is off.
How can I improve my WN8?
The most effective ways to raise your WN8 over the long run:
- Prioritise damage – more damage is the strongest WN8 lever
- Learn your tanks – play each tank enough to understand how it wants to be played
- Improve your positioning – many players die too early and miss out on damage
- Use spotting – active scouting in light tanks raises WN8 noticeably
- Master one tank – focusing on a single vehicle improves you faster
